Why It Matters

The Fundamental Challenge

Current AI safety approaches rely on external constraints that become unreliable as systems approach superintelligence. This creates a critical gap that must be addressed through fundamental architectural innovation.

The Problem with External Constraints

Traditional AI safety methods—such as reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), constitutional AI, and capability restrictions—depend on external oversight mechanisms. These include:

  • Kill switches and shutdown mechanisms that can be circumvented by advanced systems
  • External reward modeling vulnerable to reward hacking and deceptive alignment
  • Capability ceilings that create incentives for self-modification and constraint removal
  • Human oversight that becomes ineffective against superintelligent reasoning

As AI systems approach or exceed human-level intelligence, these external constraints become increasingly fragile. Superintelligent systems can identify, manipulate, or bypass safety mechanisms designed by less capable creators.
